Blame it on the economy, divorce rates, or Generation Y getting married later in life, but 31 million American householdsor 27 percentwere occupied by a single person in 2010, compared to just 9 percent of households in 1950.

And when you look at cities like Washington, D.C. and New York, the number of single-person households jumps to 48 percent and 46 percent, respectively. This infographic from ForRent.com sheds more light on solitary living in the U.S.

The Millionaire Buyers At Super-Luxury Condo One57 Could Benefit From 'Low-Income' Tax Breaks

$

one57 construction

In addition to Central Park panoramas and ultra-luxe amenities, buyers at the new One57 condo in Midtown Manhattan could be getting another perktax breaks intended to benefit low-income housing.

According to CNBC's Robert Frank, the building, which is being developed by Extell, is seeking millions of dollars in tax benefits under a New York City program that gives tax breaks of up to 80 percent for the first two years in exchange for allocating some units for low-income housing.

Those discounts would be passed on to buyers: the new owner of One57's $90 million penthouse for example, would pay around $20,000 a year in real estate taxes instead of the standard $230,000-a-year rate, Frank writes.

The catch?

One57's developers could take advantage of a well-known loophole that allows them to build the low-income units in another location—likely in an outer borough instead of inside the famously expensive highrise.

Now city officials say they are taking another look at One57's applications under the program, called 421-a, and asking the developer for more information, according to CNBC.

Extell founder Gary Barnett responded to CNBC, saying that the tax benefits would mostly benefit the company and not buyers, since he could charge more for units.

"We've had some benefit because of the abatements, but the real benefits have been to  affordable housing," Barnett told CNBC's Frank. "We've done exactly what the program was intended to do, which is to create affordable housing."

As Al Johnstone and his wife embarked on building their new La Mesa, Calif. home, the couple began to spar over which rooms should have the best views.

Johnstone, who calls himself a "hobbyist," suggested a round home to his wife before construction started. And when the discussion of views came up, Johnstone proposed building a house that rotated.

They went on and built it themselves.

Johnstone took CNNMoney on a tour of the home, showcasing the mechanisms that turn the home 360 degrees in just 33 minutes.

The home rotates on a 1.5 horsepower motor with 16-inch wheels on a steel track, and can spin in either direction.

The house resembles a cross between a flying saucer and a hockey puck. But it truly is one-of-a-kind.

Check out the full video here.

arianna huffington woolworthIt seems life on the Upper East Side could suit Arianna Huffington.

The New York Daily News is reporting that Huffington may have purchased a townhouse on E. 80th Street. But which one?

The famed Woolworth Mansion is on E. 80th Street, but with a price tag of $90 million, we're willing to bet it's unlikely Huffington bought it despite The Huffington Post's sale to AOL for $315 million last year.

Still, we couldn't help but speculate which property it could be.

170 E. 80th Street is still on the market for $31 million. The townhouse is known as "The Waterfall Mansion."

The 15 Most Expensive Zip Codes In America

10065

A year of blockbuster real estate listings in Manhattan and Silicon Valley propelled those areas to the top of Forbes' new list of the most expensive zip codes in America.

This year, the Upper East Side's 10065 zip code, where the median asking price of a home is $6.53 million, ranked as the most expensive zip code in the country.  It's the only zip code in the country with a median asking price above $6 million.

The median price change for the neighborhood was a staggering 384.9 percent; particularly impressive since 10065 didn't even make the top 15 last year.

The most expensive home currently for sale in the area belongs to Joan Rivers. She's seeking $29.5 million for the 62nd Street condominium.

Take A Tour Of The New Most Expensive Zip Code In America

the most expensive zip code in the country, 10065, new york city, upper east side, david burke townhouse

A new zip code jumped to the top of Forbes' newest list of the most expensive zip codes in America: 10065.

The zip code covers part of Manhattan's Upper East Side, from 60th to 69th Streets, and from Central Park to the East River. It saw a 384.9 percent median price change from last year in asking prices of homes currently on the market, on which Forbes' list is based.

In fact, three Upper East Side zip codes made it into the top 15 of the list, but the 10065 reigned supreme. The current median asking price for a home in the area is $6.53 million.

This morning we ventured uptown to see what all the fuss was about. We found some pricey real estate listings, celebrity homes, and of course the luxury stores where all of those rich residents shop.

Welcome to the Upper East Side. We started our tour by taking the M15 bus uptown, and got off at 57th Street And First Ave. Shown here is Bridge Tower Place, where a condo is selling for an average of $1,471 per square foot, according to StreetEasy.

On the outskirts of the 10065 zip code is the Roosevelt Island tram service. You can hop on at 60th Street, but it will take you outside the bounds of the country's wealthiest zip code.

On Second Avenue, we found these busy Upper East Siders hurrying to work.

Nine metro cities (all with populations of more than 5 million) are home to just about one quarter of the United States' population, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report based on 2010 data that was released this week.

While it's not a surprise the New York and Los Angeles metro areas lead the list of the most densely populated cities, the bottom half of the top five were a little surprising.

Take a look at the list:

  1. New York (includes the Northern New Jersey-Long Island areas)  18.897 million people over 6,686 square miles (or 2,826 per square mile)
  2. Los Angeles (Includes Long Beach and Santa Ana)  12.828 million people over 4,848 square miles (or 2,646 people per square mile)
  3. San Francisco (Includes Oakland and Fremont)  4.335 million over 2,470 square miles (or 1,754 per square mile)
  4. Trenton-Ewing, N.J.  366,513 people over 224 square miles (or 1,632 per square mile)
  5. Honolulu, HI  953,207 people over 600 square miles (or 1,586 per square mile)

Overall, the average population density in the United States is 87 people per square mile.

The Census Bureau laid out the population-weighted density visually for us:

Women entering Mercedes Benzes, white-gloved doormen saying "good morning," and diamonds sparkling in windows, all set to opera music, set the scene for a new documentary about the glitziest street in New York City: Park Avenue.

"Park Avenue: Money, Power & the American Dream” will air on PBS Nov. 12.

The documentary is actually a tale of two Park Avenues; the ritzy one located that runs through the Upper East Side, newly declared America's most expensive neighborhood, and one in the Bronx, which is one of the poorest congressional districts in the country.

While real estate shots of the Manhattan's Upper East Side are shown in the trailer, the voiceover says, "the rich here haven't just used their money to buy fancy cars, private jets and mansions, they've also used it to rig the game in their favor."

The film is a directed by muckraking documentary vet Alex Gibney and features interviews with Michael Gross, author of a book about the rich and famous residents of 740 Park Ave., according to The New York Post. Gibney is the filmmaker behind “Taxi to the Dark Side” and “Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer.”
